    36 Prison inmates write BECE, 2 candidates die, 16 more invigilators arrested

    Thirty-six jail inmates nationwide are penning this 12 months’s Primary Training Certificates Examination (BECE). 

    The 36, who’re all males, comprise 18 juveniles from the Senior Correctional Centre (SCC), seven from the Nsawam Medium Safety jail, six from the Ho Central Jail and 5 from the Kumasi Central Jail.

    The Chief Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Prisons Service, Chief Supt. Adamu Abdul Latif, who revealed this to the Every day Graphic, stated the inmates have been absolutely ready by certified lecturers from the Service and a few from the Ghana Training Service.

    He was, subsequently, optimistic that the inmates would excel in all the themes.

    Chief Supt. Latif defined that the inmates have been registered with centres near the prisons.

    They have been, subsequently, transported to and from the examination centres underneath guard.

    The BECE, which is organised yearly in Ghana’s training system, marks the transition from the Junior Excessive College to the Senior Excessive College and technical tnstitutions within the nation.

    The Ghana Prisons Service, in its quest to ship on its mandate consistent with fashionable common finest practices, launched formal training to the inmates in 2007.

    This was to assist them purchase some primary literacy expertise, in addition to a certificates to facilitate their clean reintegration.

    The primary batch, which was made up of 21 juveniles and younger offenders, sat for the BECE in 2009 and had a 100 per cent report.

    The service has been recording 100 per cent passes since then.
     

    Extra officers arrested

    In the meantime, 16 extra examination officers have been arrested for partaking in a malpractice within the ongoing BECE.

    This brings to 25 the variety of individuals who’ve been picked up inside three days for making an attempt to deliver the examination into disrepute.

    The suspects included two heads of faculty, one supervisor, with the remainder being invigilators.

    Briefing the Every day Graphic on the most recent incident yesterday, the Head of Public Affairs of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), John Kapi, revealed that two of the suspects had absconded whereas the remainder have been in police custody, pending interrogation and prosecution.

    “Out of the 25, solely three usually are not lecturers. As we converse we’ve got picked up two headteachers, who have been distributing supplies to the youngsters within the examination corridor,” he stated.

    Mr Kapi stated one of many incidents occurred at Tinkong, close to Koforidua, within the Japanese Area whereas most of them occurred in Atebubu and Kintampo within the Bono East Area .

    The remainder occurred within the Higher Accra, Bono  and Ashanti areas.

    He, nonetheless, stated that WAEC’s investigations and monitoring have been ongoing.

    Deaths

    In the meantime, two BECE candidates have been reported useless. One incident concerned a 14-year-old lady at Kwahu Praso within the Japanese Area and one other within the Assin Amoakrom within the Central Area.
