Appeals Courtroom has acquitted and discharged Yaw Asante Ageykum, a wrongfully convicted mechanic jailed in 2002 for his alleged affiliation with infamous armed robber Ataa Ayi.
In a judgment as we speak (June 5, 2025), a three-member panel on the Courtroom of Attraction, which had Justice Janapare A. Bartels-Kodwo, as its President, held that Agyekum, who was convicted 23 years in the past, couldn’t be linked to the numerous robberies carried out by Ataa Ayi.
The courtroom was of the opinion that the prosecution failed to supply adequate proof to warrant conviction and sentence of Yaw Asante.
In opposition to this backdrop, the courtroom acquitted and discharged him after eight years of authorized battle by his counsel, George Bernard Shaw.
Chatting with the media after he had his freedom, Yaw Asante mentioned, he felt joyful and mentioned the courtroom was truthful.
Sadly, Yaw Asante had already served 23 years of the 35-year sentence handed him by the Excessive Courtroom which sentenced Ataa Ayi to 70 years and 20 years in separate circumstances of armed robberies.
The three-member panel had been Justices Janapare A. Bartels-Kodwo, Aboagye Tandoh, and Stephen Oppong.
