Former Member of Parliament for Subin, Eugene Boakye Antwi, has attributed the New Patriotic Social gathering’s (NPP) defeat within the 2024 basic election to unpopular financial insurance policies launched within the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Talking on Channel One TV’s Face to Face with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Tuesday, July 1, Mr Boakye Antwi said that though Ghana’s financial system was on the suitable path earlier than the pandemic, a number of fiscal interventions meant to stabilise the financial system ended up alienating voters.

“The financial system was heading in the right direction earlier than COVID-19 struck. COVID-19 struck, and all hell broke free. We then needed to introduce extra austere insurance policies just like the E-Levy, Betting Tax, and what have you ever. And people sorts of insurance policies didn’t assist,” he mentioned.

The previous Subin MP additionally pointed to the federal government’s controversial Home Debt Alternate Programme (DDEP) as a essential issue that additional weakened public confidence.

“After the Worldwide Monetary Fund, there have been different austere insurance policies just like the DDEP, and what have you ever. Former President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, addressed the nation and guaranteed our savers, pensioners, and investors of no haircut, however there was a haircut. The haircut wiped away investments, pensions, and savings. And that damage us very badly. It simply didn’t affect the financial system; it wounded us,” he burdened.

Mr Boakye Antwi’s feedback echo sentiments amongst political observers and a few NPP insiders, who’ve cited financial laboriousship, coverage missteps, and damaged guarantees as key causes for the social gathering’s electoral defeat.

The previous lawmaker’s reflections come amid ongoing debates inside the NPP on the right way to regroup and rebuild public belief forward of the 2028 elections.
