    Gov’t reintroduces free fertiliser for cocoa farmers; cautions against smuggling

    Authorities has introduced that it’s going to provide free fertiliser and different inputs to cocoa farmers from the start of the 2025/2026 crop season.

    This was disclosed at a press convention delivered by the Finance Minister, Dr. Ato Forson after a gathering with the Producer Worth Overview Committee. In accordance with him, authorities’s resolution to reintroduce the free fertilisers is geared toward supporting farmers to extend manufacturing.

    “In preparation for the brand new season, COCOBOD has made accessible jute sacks and associated logistics for the graceful take-off of the 2025/2026 crop Season. Women and Gents, and to the cocoa farmer, I’m happy to announce that President John Mahama’s administration has reintroduced the free cocoa fertiliser programme as an extra help to the Ghanaian cocoa farmer, starting the 2025/2026 crop 12 months.”

    Dr. Forson detailed the inputs authorities intends to produce to farmers, stating that each farmer will profit from the programme.

    “Starting this crop 12 months, President Mahama’s administration will provide free cocoa fertilisers (each liquid and granular), free pesticides, free spraying machines, free fungicides, and free flower inducers to farmers.”

    He, nevertheless cautioned farmers towards smuggling of fertilisers.

    “Authorities strongly advises cocoa farmers to use these inputs solely for the aim of enhancing cocoa yield and their revenue. Please don’t smuggle them,” he stated.

    The federal government additionally introduced the approval of a major improve within the producer value of cocoa, elevating it from US$3,100 to US$5,040 per tonne for the upcoming 2025/2026 season. He added that the present Free-On-Board (FOB) worth relies on a mix of contracts offered at $2,600 per tonne within the 2023/24 crop 12 months and ahead forecasts for 2025/2026.

    The rise means cocoa farmers will now obtain GH¢51,660 per tonne or GH¢3,228.75 per 64-kilogramme bag of cocoa.
