    GRTCC suspends proposed 20% increase in public transport fares

    The Ghana Highway Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has suspended the proposed 20% enhance in public transport fares, which was scheduled to take impact from Friday, August 8, 2025.

    This was disclosed by the Transport Ministry after a choice was reached following a high-level assembly between the Ministry and street transport unions on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

    The assembly was referred to as by the ministry to handle issues surrounding the shortage of broader stakeholder consultations forward of the proposed fare adjustment.

    In a press release issued by the Transport Ministry after the assembly, GRTCC and different transport operators concerned agreed that the supposed increment wouldn’t be applied emphasizing the necessity for inclusive engagement on future fare changes.

    “Transport Operators following the assembly have agreed to droop the purported 20% increment in public transport fares because of the shortage of broader consultations on the choice.”  The assertion stated.

    The assertion additional urged all operators to proceed making use of the present fare discount that’s at the moment in place which has been in impact since Could, 2025.

    “Transport Operators have due to this fact agreed to take care of the implementation of the 15% discount in public transport fares which took impact on twenty fourth Could, 2025.”
