    Alan Kyerematen unveils 10-point action plan to end galamsey after helicopter tragedy

    The Chief of the Motion for Change, Alan Kyerematen, has outlined a sweeping Ten-Level Motion Plan aimed toward ending unlawful mining, popularly generally known as Galamsey, describing it as an “existential menace” to the nation’s future.

    His assertion comes within the wake of the helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, which claimed the lives of eight distinguished people whereas on nationwide responsibility within the Ashanti Area.

    In a press assertion issued on Sunday, August 17, Kyerematen says the tragedy emphasised the pressing want for decisive motion in opposition to Galamsey, which continues to devastate Ghana’s atmosphere, water our bodies, and communities.

    On the centre of his proposal is a direct one-year ban on all small-scale and artisanal mining actions—whether or not authorized or unlawful—by way of an Government Instrument.

    Kyerematen mentioned the moratorium would permit for a complete audit of mining operations and licences.

    Different measures embrace:

    • Suspension of LI 2462 in Parliament to halt permits permitting mining in forest reserves.
    • Revocation of all small-scale and group mining licences issued over the previous 15 years, to be adopted by a full audit led by a job pressure from the Goldbod, Environmental Safety Company, Water Sources Fee and Minerals Fee.
    • Demobilisation and preservation of mining tools, to be carried out by the 48 Engineer’s Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces.
    • Giant-scale land and river restoration programmes, to be led by the Forestry Fee and Water Sources Fee with technical help from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Analysis (CSIR).
    • Introduction of stricter laws, together with a everlasting ban on mining in forest reserves and river our bodies, with life imprisonment for offenders.
    • Creation of a “Youth in Accountable Mining Initiative”, offering younger folks with state-backed licences and tools to function authorized, personal mining corporations underneath regulated circumstances.
