The Nationwide Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Occasion (NPP) has condemned the arrest and detention of two TikTokers, Fante Comedy and AY, in addition to social media activist Sir-Obama Pokuase, describing the transfer as an assault on free speech.
In an announcement issued on Wednesday, August 13, the group stated the three had been arrested over feedback made in a viral video, which police deemed unsuitable.
It argued that the feedback, whereas unsavoury, had been opinions the people had been entitled to beneath Ghana’s constitutional assure of free speech.
The NPP Youth Wing expressed shock that the Ghana Police Service would, in its phrases, “waste sources” to arrest younger residents who had no capability or intent to trigger hurt, whereas failing to take motion in opposition to what it referred to as “worse reckless feedback” from members of the opposition Nationwide Democratic Congress (NDC) prior to now.
It accused the police of adopting a partisan strategy and appearing as a software for the chief, questioning why there was intolerance towards NPP supporters.
The group pointed to an alleged violent assault on MP for Awutu Senya East, Hawa Koomson, and different NPP members in the course of the Ablekuma North Constituency rerun, claiming that the perpetrators, whom they described as NDC members, had been nonetheless free.
Calling the arrests “shamelessly biased” and “undemocratic,” the NPP Youth Wing demanded the speedy and unconditional launch of Fante Comedy, AY, and Sir-Obama Pokuase.
