    PUWU hoists red flags nationwide over gov’t plan to privatize ECG and NEDCo

    Pressure is mounting throughout the nation as members of the Public Utility Employees Union (PUWU) step up opposition to authorities plans to introduce personal sector participation within the operations of the Electrical energy Firm of Ghana (ECG) and the Northern Electrical energy Distribution Firm (NEDCo).

    Pink flags have been hoisted in any respect 92 district places of work and 14 regional administrative facilities nationwide in a daring and symbolic protest by PUWU members.

    The motion follows affirmation by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson that Cupboard has authorized the controversial transfer.

    On the headquarters of the Volta River Authority (VRA) and ECG, positioned at Electro Volta Home in Accra, the agitation is visibly underway.

    JoyNews correspondent James Avedzi reported that purple cloths have been wrapped round signposts and banners displayed on the major entrance.

    He indicated that safety personnel on responsibility confirmed the early indicators of protest, noting that extra seen demonstrations, together with the sporting of purple armbands by staff, are anticipated to accentuate from Monday, April 28.

    Chatting with JoyNews on Friday, April 25, the Deputy Basic Secretary of PUWU, Reverend Enoch Paul Hayes, expressed dissatisfaction with the federal government’s method, particularly the shortage of transparency and stakeholder engagement concerning the privatization course of.

    “Employees of ECG should not actually proud of the way in which, particularly the committee and the Ministry of Power is dealing with this complete subject of the Non-public Sector Participation (PSP), which we imagine that some stakeholders’ engagement from the start has been held and the entire of TUC being concerned.

    “We heard from an article from the Minister of Finance saying that the cupboard has already authorized the PSP, which we imagine, as staff and main stakeholders, doesn’t go effectively with us, as a result of the union and labour entrance – there purported to be some stage of engagement,” he mentioned.

    Rev Hayes criticised the method for sidelining key stakeholders just like the union and broader labour entrance, accusing the ministry of working “behind closed doorways.”

    “We’re sounding a warning. That is the hoisting of the purple flag, and we’re saying that they need to be tread very cautiously as a result of why are we in a haste? What’s the hurry for? Why are we making an attempt to do issues underneath the carpet? If we actually wish to do one thing higher for the nation, after which for the vitality sector, every thing ought to be open, every thing ought to be clear,” he added.
