    West African cities embrace risk-informed planning in new urban resilience workshop series

    In a daring transfer to deal with the rising threats of local weather change, fast urbanisation, and catastrophe threat, cities throughout West Africa are coming collectively underneath a brand new initiative aimed toward strengthening city resilience.

    The Resilience Initiative Africa (RIA), carried out by GIZ on behalf of Germany’s Federal Ministry for Financial Cooperation and Growth (BMZ), has launched a Workshop Collection on Threat-Knowledgeable City Growth focusing on cities inside the ECOWAS area.

    The programme is a part of the broader Africa City Resilience Programme (AURP), developed by the African Union Fee with help from the UNDP Sahel Resilience Venture and Sweden.

    In partnership with Connective Cities and supported by the German Affiliation of Cities, this workshop collection brings collectively municipal officers, civil society, and the non-public sector to develop revolutionary and inclusive methods to handle city catastrophe dangers.

    The three-part workshop collection kicked off with its first session in Lomé, Togo (March 18–20, 2025), introducing key ideas of risk-informed city improvement, participatory planning, and built-in approaches to local weather adaptation and mitigation. Contributors additionally engaged in peer-to-peer concept mapping and interactive role-play workout routines to simulate catastrophe response eventualities.

    The second workshop which passed off in Accra, Ghana (July 2–7, 2025)  targeted on participatory threat evaluation, monetary planning for resilience, and in-depth case research critiques from African and European cities.

    Between workshops, cities will obtain tailor-made skilled help to refine their venture proposals and acquire publicity to profitable resilience methods via a collection of digital “Perception Classes.”

    By fostering collaboration between African and European cities, and empowering native actors together with residents of casual settlements, youth and ladies’s teams this initiative hopes to unlock sensible, bankable options to a few of West Africa’s most urgent city challenges.
