The Western Regional Minister, Mr Joseph Nelson, has issued a robust warning towards the rising encroachment on Ghana Water Firm Restricted’s (GWCL) lands on the Daboase water therapy website within the Wassa East District, describing the event as unlawful and detrimental to the area’s water safety.

Throughout a familiarisation go to to the location, the Minister directed GWCL to urgently demarcate the buffer zones surrounding the power to halt additional unauthorised human actions threatening the essential water useful resource.

“This can be a main nationwide funding. Encroachment on this land should cease instantly. The chiefs who offered land throughout the buffer zone declare ignorance, stating they didn’t understand it was a restricted space. To stop additional encroachment, I recommend putting in signposts to obviously mark the buffer zone as a no-go space. If ignored, the legislation ought to take its course,” the Minister warned.

He urged the District Chief Govt to interact the native chiefs and be certain that no additional exercise happens throughout the designated restricted zones.

The transfer seeks to guard the continued €70 million water enlargement challenge at Daboase, being undertaken by Austrian agency Strabag, which goals to provide 22 million gallons of water each day to Sekondi-Takoradi and its surrounding communities.

Mr Nelson expressed concern that, regardless of seen indicators of unlawful growth, landowners within the space have distanced themselves from the encroachment, claiming no data of how such actions commenced.

“The event of this challenge gained’t be allowed to endure, regardless of the clearing already carried out. Their actions are unlawful and threaten the water provide to the metropolis and neighbouring communities,” he pressured.

The Daboase facility, initially constructed within the late Sixties with a six-million-gallon each day capability, at the moment struggles alongside the Inchaban plant (4 million gallons per day) to satisfy rising demand. The brand new challenge is anticipated to shut that offer hole.

In response to Mr Vlad Falup, Undertaking Supervisor at Strabag Engineering, “All foremost buildings are full. We’re at the moment engaged on the high-lift pumping station, which homes the pumps that can transport water to Inchaban and different pumping stations. The mechanical gear is in place, and although the tanks are underground with buildings above, we’re assured we are going to end by 7 November 2025.”

Nevertheless, GWCL officers have raised purple flags over the fast fee of encroachment. Gideon Asare Annor, Western Regional Supervisor accountable for manufacturing at GWCL, warned that the environmental injury may jeopardise all the funding.

“As you’ll be able to see, the buffer zone has been fully encroached upon. This implies the river will seemingly dry up quicker than ordinary throughout the dry season, rendering our 22-million-gallon-per-day therapy plant idle, which might be unlucky,” he famous.

“The encroachment is obvious, particularly for the reason that space is vulnerable to erosion. Ideally, the buffer zone ought to begin additional as much as stop runoff and shield the water supply,” he added.

The state of affairs is additional exacerbated by local weather change, unlawful mining, and different human actions which have considerably elevated water turbidity. In consequence, GWCL’s water manufacturing from the Daboase plant has dropped from six million gallons per day to only over 16,000 gallons per day.

With demand for clear water in Sekondi-Takoradi and its environs steadily rising, the Regional Minister’s warning and the decision for speedy motion have introduced recent urgency to the necessity for sustainable safety of Ghana’s water sources.
