Professor of Finance on the College of Ghana Enterprise Faculty, Godfred Bokpin, has expressed assist for the Ghana Tertiary Schooling Fee’s (GTEC) plan to sensitise the general public on the usage of honorary titles.

In accordance with him, many recipients of the honorary titles undertake them with out absolutely appreciating their implications.

Talking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, August 23, Prof. Bokpin stated the Ghana Tertiary Schooling Fee (GTEC) should step up efforts in sensitisation and public consciousness to make sure that the general public understands the correct use of such distinctions.

“I believe that there ought to be a whole lot of sensitisation. Lots of people have used these honorary [titles], possibly with out correctly understanding the implications. I’m positive GTEC will do a whole lot of sensitisation, publication and all of that,” he stated.

Drawing comparisons with practices in different nations, the finance professor famous that recipients of honorary doctorates overseas typically keep away from styling themselves as “Physician”, as an alternative specializing in their output and contributions.

“Elsewhere, folks undergo all of those they usually don’t even confer with themselves as Dr. They’re medical doctors, alright, however they only write their names and transfer on, as a result of the entire thing is efficiency; the entire thing is productiveness,” Prof. Bokpin defined.

He criticised what he described as Ghana’s overemphasis on titles on the expense of efficiency and productiveness, blaming it on the nation’s incentive constructions.

“Sadly for us, we aren’t pushed by all of those. It’s due to the inducement mechanism we’ve put in place that persons are responding to. So you’re a physician—yeah, that provides you a sure privilege or respect or accomplishment; in the meantime, there is no such thing as a efficiency or productiveness to that,” he argued.

Prof. Bokpin added that Ghana has reached a degree the place the pursuit of titles seems to overshadow the pursuit of excellence.

“We’re on the level the place titles carry anointing. The drive is to accumulate titles by no matter means. It’s simpler to fulfill someone who has two or three grasp’s levels. It’s merely due to the inducement mechanism we’ve put in place as a rustic, which doesn’t put a premium on productiveness,” he stated.
