Military personnel have apprehended an unlawful miner who tried to evade arrest by masking himself in mud.
The arrest happened on March 20, 2025, throughout the second section of an operation within the Subri Forest geared toward combating unlawful mining.
This crackdown follows a current joint safety process drive operation led by the Savannah Regional Safety Council (REGSEC), which resulted within the arrest of 9 people, together with 5 overseas nationals, for participating in unlawful mining alongside the Black Volta Basin within the Bamboi enclave of the Savannah Area.

Authorities launches Blue Water Guards initiative
In response to the continuing environmental destruction attributable to illegal mining, the Minister for Lands and Pure Assets, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has launched the federal government’s flagship Blue Water Initiative to revive polluted water sources.
As a part of this initiative, the federal government has commenced a four-week coaching programme for the primary batch of 460 Blue Water Guards, who will present 24-hour monitoring and safety of the nation’s water our bodies.
The minister emphasised that these guards will function vigilant stewards, safeguarding water sources from the devastating results of unlawful mining.
Moreover, the federal government has outlined plans to coach and deploy 2,000 extra guards nationwide within the coming months as a part of its broader effort to finish unlawful mining, popularly referred to as galamsey.
