    Minority stages walkout ahead of mid-year budget review presentation

    Members of the Minority Caucus in Parliament staged a walkout from the Home on Thursday, 24 July, forward of the presentation of the mid-year price range overview assertion by the Minister for Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson.

    In keeping with the caucus, their determination was in protest towards the latest violence that marred the rerun of parliamentary elections within the Ablekuma North constituency.

    Talking on the ground of the Home previous to the walkout, Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh tried to lift the matter. Nonetheless, he was interrupted by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, who urged him to postpone the difficulty to be able to enable the Finance Minister to ship the assertion.

    Mr Annoh-Dompreh then introduced the choice of the Minority to boycott the presentation, stating that they may not be a part of the proceedings. The Minority MPs subsequently walked out of the chamber, whereas their counterparts on the Majority aspect chanted “away.”

    Following the walkout, the Minority MPs proceeded to Cantonments to petition members of the Diplomatic Corps. Comparable petitions are anticipated to be introduced on the Jubilee Home.

    This walkout follows an identical protest by the Minority in the course of the swearing-in of the newly elected Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North, Ewurabena Aubynn.

    The rerun, held throughout 19 polling stations on Friday, 11 July, was marred by violent incidents, together with the assault of no less than three journalists, the New Patriotic Celebration’s parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, and former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, amongst others.

    In the meantime, the Higher Accra Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service has arrested two people in reference to the incident. A press release issued by the police on Wednesday, 23 July 2025, confirmed the arrest of Musah Muntari, a 46-year-old Station Supervisor at STC, and Ali Saeed, alias Mboma, a 43-year-old businessman.

    Extra suspects are anticipated to be apprehended as police investigations proceed within the coming weeks.
